National Center for Atmospheric Research

Request for Computing Resources

Use this form for requests of more than 8000 GAUs. These requests require CISL-HPC Panel approval.

Instructions: This web-based form constitutes an official request for computing services available through the Computational and Information Systems Laboratory (CISL) of the National Center for Atmospheric Research. Please fill in all of the fields on this form and, when finished, click on the "Submit Request" button at the bottom of this file.

IMPORTANT: If you submit a request for computing services you should get a response from CISL within 48 hours. If you do not, please contact Ginger Caldwell (303-497-1229).

Once you submit the form you will no longer be able to access the form to make changes. You may email changes to alloc@ucar.edu

If you need an advance of 2000 GAUs on your large request please email alloc after submitting the form.

E. Proposal Summary, Progress Report, and References

  • Please email Section E as a PDF file to alloc@ucar.edu
  • In the Proposal Summary, please provide a self-contained proposal describing your project. This should be the equivalent of 4-5 typewritten pages, excluding figures and publications. It is important to give sufficient information for the realistic evaluation of the scientific problem.
  • The relationship of the proposed work to atmospheric science and related geosciences should be indicated.
  • NEW - The names and institutions of collaborators should be listed. Please note if there aren't additional collaborators.
  • The description of the numerical approach should be sufficiently detailed for reviewers to confirm the estimate of machine time required. For example, in the solution of a system of time-dependent partial differential equations, the descriptions should include the finite difference approximations, and the methods proposed for integration in time and space. An estimate of the number of grid points and the number of parameters to be retained at each time step should also be given.
  • Details on how computing requirements are estimated MUST be included in the proposal summary. This is because reviewers of the NCAR computing requests are asked to evaluate whether the resources sought are justified and will be used efficiently.
  • Progress Report including publications submitted for any related work using CISL computing resources. This is a new requirement for all panel proposals.

Information for items 1 thru 5 is required. Please number each item.

  1. Present the number of GAUs required for the proposed set of computational experiments in a table. The table should give the GAUs per simulated year for each experimental configuration. This should be substantiated with benchmarks on an IBM Power5 or POWER6 system and stated in the request. Please state the number of nodes typically used by your code and the number of processors on these nodes. You may request an account to obtain benchmark information. To request an account for this purpose, please complete the Small Request Form .
  2. Justify why the number of runs for each experiment given in #1 above is needed and not more or fewer, citing references or details of previous work supporting this. Without this information the Panel may reduce or deny your computing request.
  3. Special requirements, such as large temporary disk space or special software.
  4. The maximum number of TBs you plan to store on NCAR's Mass Store during the life of your project? If your data storage is < 1TB just enter < 1TB.
  5. Evidence that your program code is well optimized and operates efficiently and responsibly in an environment where resources are shared and are at a premium. Include documentation on program code performance (e.g., timings, performance monitoring tools). You may include the URL of a web page detailing code performance. The requestor is responsible for convincing the reviewers of optimized code performance.
