NCAR to more than double university computational resources in December 2002

Deadline for large allocation requests on blackforest or bluesky is 17 September 2002

Blackforest, the IBM SP at the core of NCAR's Advanced Research Computing System (ARCS)

As part of phase two of NCAR's Advanced Research Computing System (ARCS), the computational resources available to the university community are will more than double in December 2002. (This is in addition to the doubling of resources provided in December 2001 when blackforest was upgraded as part of phase one.) The new computer, bluesky, will use IBM's new POWER 4 processors.

SCD invites users to submit large allocation requests (greater than 900 GAUs) by 17 September 2002 for use on blackforest or bluesky. The submission form for large requests may be accessed at:

http://www.scd.ucar.edu/resources/lrg_compServ.html

Requests for 900 GAUs or less can be submitted at any time. An overview of the allocation process with links to the small request form is at:

http://www.scd.ucar.edu/resources/overviewalloc.html

The GAU was revalued on 1 July 2002, so estimates should be based on experiments run after July 1 or simply multiply pre-July GAU use by 0.3. See

http://www.scd.ucar.edu/computers/blackforest/#charges

for the GAU definition for blackforest.

The median request reviewed by the SCD Advisory Panel has increased to 7000 GAUs (about 23K in old GAUs) and the largest allocation to date has been 33,000 GAUs. Allocations may be given for the life of the project based on on the NSF award end date.

Allocation questions may be sent to alloc@ucar.edu or by calling Ginger Caldwell, 303-497-1229.
