Lowering equipment by crane

Down the hatch!

Sunlight hits the edge of a circuitbreaker switchboard being lowered by crane into the NCAR basement on 30 July 2001. The delivery also included another switchboard and two transformers.

The new equipment is being installed in the Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) Room near the NCAR Computer Room as part of SCD's plan to upgrade electrical power delivery for new computing systems expected by year's end.

The crane used to lower the equipment belongs to NCAR's Atmospheric Technology Division. ATD's Jeff Bobka (pictured) is in charge of the crane, which is stored at NCAR's Marshall Facility. When this photo was taken, he was guiding the "drop," while ATD's Jose Rivas was operating the crane.

ATD has provided SCD with a great deal of support for the UPS upgrade project by lending staff time and use of their crane and forklift. The cooperation between ATD and SCD has saved NCAR a great deal of money and scheduling problems.

This was the third of four UPS equipment deliveries, the first of which arrived on 4 June 2001.
