SCD hits the Wild Wild West

SCD in Lip Synch

On 11 May 2001, SCD brought out the big guns for "The Wild Wild West," wowing the crowd with their performance in the annual NCAR/UCAR Spring Fling Lip Synch Competition. Thirteen SCD staff members, including honorary SCD member Tim Barnes (whose official affiliation is UCAR Education and Outreach), put on a bang-up show featuring a hero, a villain, a beautiful girl, cowboy rappers, and hip-hop dancers -- standard western fare with a 21st century twist. For more photos, see "SCD goes Wild" and "SCD's Wild West photo gallery."

SCD staff participated for a variety of reasons:

  • Tim Scheitlin of SCD's Visualization and Enabling Technologies Section (VETS) cited "the promise of fame and fortune, the lure of celebrity status."
  • Aaron Andersen, manager of the Operations and Information Support (OIS) Section, mentioned gentle persuasion ("Lana made me do it").
  • Ethan Alpert of VETS, a repeat performer from last year, noted: "It's like the Mafia. Once you're in, there's only one way you can leave."

Trail bosses Lana Soller (OIS) and Mary Haley ( VETS) roped the frisky crew together and worked hard to create the fancy footwork. They borrowed steps from Will Smith's "Wild Wild West" music video as well as moves from hip-hop, contra, and country western dancing.

Team members enjoyed the camaraderie of rehearsals, the rush of adrenaline on performance day, and the thrill of leaving basement offices for the great outdoors to holler "ehah" and "yippee."

For their efforts, SCD Spring Flingers were rewarded with this year's "Best Choreography" and "Best Costume" awards.
