L2F
Layer 2 Fowarding

L2QP
Layer 2 Query Protocol

L2TP
Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol

LAN
Local Area Network. A network confined to a small physical area. Most LANs connect computers in a room or building, and sometimes in several buildings that are close together.

LANbridge 100
A bridge manufactured by Digital Equipment Corporation. It has 2 AUI ports, labelled A and B, or an AUI port and an SMA fiber port.

LANE
LAN Emulation

LANL
Los Alamos National Laboratory

LAT
Local Area Transport. The protocol spoken by Digital Equipment Corporation's DECserver terminal servers, X-terminals and VAXes.

LCD
Liquid Crystal Display

LD
Limited Deployment (Cisco)

LDA
Local Director Acceleration

LDAP
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol

LDM
Low-speed Serial Data Module; Limited Distance Modem; Local Data Manager (UNIDATA software)

LDP
Label Distribution Protocol, a part of MPLS.

LDT
Large Dataset Transport Project.

LDUP
LDAP Duplication/Replication/Update Protocol

LEAF
A type of single-mode fiber made by Corning.

LEARN
Laboratory Experience in Atmospheric Research at NCAR

LED
Light Emitting Diode. The small light bulbs found on many computer devices.

LFI
Link Fragmentation and Interleaving

little-endian
A format for storage or transmission of binary data in which the least significant byte (bit) comes first. See big-endian.

LLAP
LocalTalk Link Access Protocol, the protocol spoken on a LocalTalk network. It has a "dynamic address-acquisition" method, which means new machines choose a random address and then ask the net if it's unique. If so, the machine adopts the address. If not, the machine chooses a new one and asks again. This permits a "plug-and-play" network.

LLC
Logical Link Control

LLQ
Low Latency Queuing

LLWAS
Low-Level Wind Shear Alert System

LNP
Local Number Portability

LocalTalk
A twisted-pair medium used to connect Apple products in a local-area network. LocalTalk can connect up to 32 Macintoshes, LaserWriters and Apple IIGS devices in a slow (230.4 kilobits/second) network spanning up to 300 meters. Macintoshes and LaserWriters come with built-in LocalTalk interfaces.

LOF
Loss Of Frame. An alarm that can be raised by Movaz equipment.

LOL
Loss Of Light. One of several alarm types that may be reported by a "show alarm" command on an ADVA optical switch. The "location" column shows which card and port has the "loss of light" condition.

LOS
Line Of Sight.

LOS
Loss Of Signal. An alarm that can be raised by Movaz equipment.

LPC
Linear Predictive Coding

LR2000
A repeater manufactured by Cabletron Systems. It has 2 ethernet ports.

LRE
Long-Reach Ethernet

LRF
Local Registration File (HPOV)

LX/LH
Long Wavelength/Long Haul
