Internet Activities Board. The technical body that oversees the development of the Internet suite of protocols (commonly referred to as "TCP/IP"). It has two task forces (the IRTF and the IETF) each charged with investigating a particular area.
Internet Control Message Protocol. The protocol used to handle errors and control messages at the IP layer. ICMP is actually part of the IP protocol. For instance, the IP "ping" command uses an ICMP Echo Request to see if a host can respond.

Internet address
A unique 32-bit address assigned to each host computer on the Internet. Usually represented in dotted-decimal notation, e.g 128.125.1.45. Humans have trouble remembering numbers, so names are assigned to each Internet address, and most network software uses the Domain Name System to translate the names to numbers behind the scenes. For example, the Internet address for one of NCAR's machines is128.117.8.1; its Internet name is niwot.scd.ucar.edu, and most network software allows the name niwot.scd.ucar.edu to be used, or just niwot by other machines in the scd.ucar.edu domain. Internet addresses are composed of a network part, a subnetwork part and a host part. All Internet addresses at NCAR have a network number of 128.117,
Internet
(note the capital "I") The largest internet in the world consisting of large national backbone nets (such as MILNET, NSFNET, and CREN) and a myriad of regional and local campus networks (such as WESTnet, CERFnet and SURAnet) all over the world. The Internet uses the Internet protocol suite. To be on the Internet you must have IP connectivity, i.e., be able to telnet to --or ping-- other systems. Networks with only e-mail connectivity are not actually classified as being on the Internet.
internet
A collection of networks interconnected by a set of routers which allow them to function as a single, large virtual network.
interoperate
The ability of computers from multiple vendors to work together using a common set of protocols.
IOS

IP address
See Internet address.
IP datagram
The fundamental unit of information passed across the Internet. Contains source and destination addresses along with data and a number of fields which define such things as the length of the datagram, the header checksum, and flags to say whether the datagram can be (or has been) fragmented.
