Other network projects

Projects listed in this section are ones that don't neatly fit into the LAN, MAN, and WAN project classification scheme. However, these other projects do readily divide into NCAR/UCAR support projects and SCD support projects.

NCAR/UCAR projects

NETS NCAB project

NETS receives funding both from SCD and directly from UCAR. NETS took the lead in establishing the Network Coordination and Advisory Board (NCAB), which consists of appointed technical representatives from the NCAR divisions and UCAR. The purpose of NCAB is to advise NETS concerning network planning, policy, expansion, and management issues for all of NCAR and UCAR.

The formation of NCAB has been indispensable to the success of NETS because UCAR funding of networking means that a representative body broader than NETS needed to take an active role in allocating scarce funds to competing UCARnet priorities. Additionally, NCAB has acted as a highly visible, interdisciplinary constituency able to directly inform NCAR/UCAR regarding the importance of network funding and support to the mission of NCAR/UCAR.

Conference and outreach support project

During the past year, NETS has provided networking support for numerous classes, demonstrations, meetings, and conferences throughout NCAR/UCAR. This work involved the design, construction, configuration, and operation of network, workstation, and PC components required by these activities.

NETS also presented seminars as part of the SCD Seminar Series, and NETS personnel attended numerous conferences/meetings/training sessions and prepared the numerous trip reports that can be found at: http://www.scd.ucar.edu/nets/Documents/Trip-Reports/

SCD projects

Film production/Dicomed support project

NETS continued maintaining several online Dicomed high-resolution cameras attached to the MASnet-connected TAGS (Text and Graphics System) graphical output system until 9/30/97. NETS is in the process of decommissioning the Film Room and all related hardware systems.
