SCD reviewed emergency operator procedures following the
"smoking" of a C90 module on December 24, 1996. Although staff
are briefed routinely on some safety procedures, such as
yearly fire extinguisher training, additional steps were taken
to increase staff safety in the event of fire in the SCD computer
room:
A periodic inventory of chemicals in the SCD computer room was
performed. This inventory is updated upon the introduction or removal
of chemicals within the SCD computer room. This inventory was relocated
to be easily accessible to the SCD computer operators.
Two hours of training were provided to all staff by the UCAR Health,
Environment, and Safety Services Group on Material Safety Data Sheets
and how they are interpreted. Material Safety Data Sheets are provided
on all chemicals within the SCD computer room, including toxic
chemicals.
Since vendors are not required by law to provide information to
buyers about the dangers associated with by-products created when
materials are burned, we cannot provide specific instruction for
materials. Staff should move to a well-ventilated area if chemicals
or fumes cause eyes, nose, or throat discomfort and contact the UCAR
Health, Environment, and Safety Services Group. Evacuation procedures
for the computer room were also reviewed.
Staff were briefed on what to do in case of a) live electrical wires
and water, b) if they see smoke rising from the raised floor, and c)
the risks associated with leaking refrigerants.
SCD and UCAR reviewed communication procedures in case of an
emergency.
Set up and reviewed staff safety training. SCD's Safety Officer
meets individually with each new staff member on safety procedures.
Video tapes on Material Safety and Violence in the Workplace are
available to staff who have not had in-person training. Viewing
these tapes or receiving in-person training are required for SCD
computer operators.
