Community serviceAaron Andersen acted as the scientific mentor for Christina Webb, a SOARS protege. Christina's work in the summer focused on evaluating the utility of the METIS approach to distributed workflow. Aaron Andersen and Lana Stillwell hosted Dietger Hoffman, a student from Germany, for one month in the summer. Dietger completed some prototype work on the room reservation system, and this work was released for feedback from administrative staff. Tom Bettge attended the 10th Workshop on Use of High Performance Computing in Meteorology at ECMWF in Reading, England. During November, he organized SCD meetings with vendors to review future computing directions at SC2002 in Baltimore, Maryland. He participated in the activities of the NSF NPACI Resource Allocation Committee in December, March, June, and September. He attended the AGU 2002 Fall Meeting in San Francisco. In March he attended the DOE Climate Change Prediction Program investigator's meeting in Charleston, SC. He particpated in the IEEE/NASA MSST 2003 conference in San Diego in April. In June he participated in the DOE Office of Science Computing Conference on the Future of Supercomputing in Washington, DC. He attended the 8th annual CCSM Workshop in June. He attended the biannual CASC Meeting in August in Berkeley, CA. He was the Program Chairman of the 6th Computing in Atmospheric Sciences (CAS) Workshop, sponsored by SCD and vendors, in September in Annecy, France. Brian Bevirt served as a science writing mentor for UCAR's SOARS program. Dorothy Bustamante participates as a member of the Boulder County Latina Women's League (BCLWL), a non-profit organization that focuses on creating educational opportunities for Latina middle school and high school students. This year BCLWL sponsored its third annual Latinas Building Bridges in Education program that matches Latina students with professional women in the community, with the goal of providing Latina girls exposure to the professional world. This year BCLWL partnered with UCAR. Dorothy's participation included finding mentors, matching the students with their mentors, serving as a liaison between the schools and BCLWL, and transporting students from school to the workplace, to the luncheon, and returning the students to their school or home. BCLWL was nominated for the Community Action Program award in 2003. Fred Clare continued to serve on the NCAR Library Book Selection Committee. John Clyne served as a reviewer for the IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications special issue on Grid Computing, reviewed two papers for the journal Future Generation of Computer Systems special issue on the iGrid2002 conference, and reviewed two more papers for IEEE Visualization '03. John also served as a steering committee member for a DOE workshop on software frameworks for distributed visualization and on a review panel for DOE Early Career Principal Investigators (ECPI) proposal. John also served as a science mentor for SOARS Scot Colburn served as the chair of the Front Range GigaPop Technical Committee (FTC). Susan Cross served as a Community Mentor for the SOARS program George Fuentes is the NCAR voting member of IBM's SP-XXL Group. The SP-XXL group is comprised of IBM SP installations that are 128 nodes and greater. The SP-XXL group meets three times a year and provides technical input to IBM on new functionality that should be added to the AIX and PSSP operating system product toolset. Marc Genty is the Resource Management working group chair for the IBM SP-XXL Group. Pam Gillman is the System Administration working group chair for the IBM SP-XXL Group. Gene Harano was on the Program Committee for the 20th IEEE/11th NASA Goddard Conference on Mass Storage Systems & Technologies. The conference was held in San Diego, California, on April 7-10, 2003. Gene Harano is a member of the Program Committee for the 12th NASA Goddard/21st IEEE Conference on Mass Storage Systems and Technologies, which is scheduled for April 13-16, 2004, in College Park, Maryland. Gene was a member of the program committee for the Computing in Atmospheric Sciences 2003 (CAS2K3) workshop, sponsored by SCD and vendors. CAS2K2 was held September 7-11, 2003, in Annecy, France. Gene is a member of the StorageTek Strategic Advisory Council, which provides feedback on corporate planning, and is also a member of the StorageTek Large Tape Users Group (LTUG). Gene attended the High Availibility Methods in Storing Terabytes for Environmental Research (HAMSTER) workshop in Langden, Germany, which was sponsored by DWD; and he gave a presentation on the NCAR Mass Storage System. Gene gave a presentation on the NCAR Mass Storage System to the Microsoft Storage Group in Redmond, Washington. Gene, along with BJ Heller, the Mass Storage Systems Group, and John Clyne of VETS, hosted the StorageTek Japan Users Group. Al Kellie participated in the ECMWF 10th workshop on Use of High Performance Computing in Meteorology in Reading England. He attended the AGU2002 Fall Meeting in San Francisco. He also attended the SPXXL Winter Meeting in Maui. While attending the AMS meeting in California this year, Mr. Kellie participated in the NCEP Advisory Panel Meeting. He attended the Seventh Global Grid Forum in Tokyo Japan. In March he attended the NPACI All-Hands Meeting in San Diego California. In April, Mr. Kellie participated in the IEEE/NASA MSST2003 meeting in San Diego. He attended the ICCS meeting this year held in Melbourne Australia. Mr. Kellie traveled to Germany in June to attend the International Supercomputer Conference in Heidelberg and returned to Germany in July to participate in the DWD/SCAI workshop in Frankfurt. From Germany he traveled to Finland to attend the Summer SPXXL meeting held this year in Espoo. Mr. Kellie took part in the CASC Members Meeting hosted by NERSC in Berkeley California. Mr. Kellie was also involved in several IBM meetings throughout the year. Mr. Kellie represents NCAR/SCD in the Computing Research Association (CRA) and also the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) throughout the year. He co-chairs the Computing in Atmospheric Sciences (CAS) workshops, which are sponsored by SCD and vendors. The last meeting was held in September 2003 in Annecy France. The next CAS meeting is scheduled for fall 2005. Jeff Kuehn was the Chair of the highly rated Tutorials Program for the joint ACM and IEEE-CS SC2002 conference on high-performance computing and networking. Kuehn has provided ongoing consulting to the SC2003 Tutorials Program co-chairs. Linda LaBrie participates as a board member for Boulder Valley Schools, Vocational-Technical Education. She provides advice and an information technology perspective from her work as the Computer Production Group supervisor in directing Boulder Valley Vo-Tech's computing education programs. She also acts as a mentor for students and serves as a court-appointed special advocate acting as a liason for parents involved with Social Services and the court system. Lynda Lester sponsors the Boulder-based Web Designers and Developers group. Marla Meehl serves on the Westnet Steering Committee, is chair of the Front Range GigaPop Management Committee (FMC), and is a member of the Quilt Steering and Executive Committees. Marla served on the BRAN Management and BRAN Technical committees. Marla is a member of the NSF Steering Committee for Cyberinfrastructure Research and Development in the Atmospheric Sciences (CyRDAS). Marla served on the National LambdaRail (NLR) committee. Marla also supported the Cyberinfrastructure for Environmental Research and Education Workshop. John Merrill attended the July 2003 meeting of the Tape Head Interface Consortium (THIC) and gave a presentation titled "Integrating Fibre Channel Storage Devices into the NCAR MSS," in which he described the work currently being done by the MSS Group on the Storage Manager subsystem. Don Middleton leads the NCAR Strategic Initiative in Cyberinfrastructure and serves on the advisory committee for NCAR's Geographic Information System Strategic Initiative. Don also served as co-PI for the NSF-sponsored Visual Geophysical Education Environment, co-PI on the NSF NSDL THREDDS project, and Senior Personnel on the NASA AIST GridBGC effort. Don serves as coordinating PI on the DOE Earth System Grid project, and organized and hosted a multi-day all-hands workshop for this project as well as a community peer review in Chicago later in the year. Middleton continued to participate on the MAGIC/Grid (Multi-agency Grid Infrastructure Committee) panel being run out of the White House OSTP for developing interagency Grid coordination plans and participated in a MAGIC workshop. Don served also on the NSF Strategic Planning Panel for UCAR's Joint Office for Science Support (JOSS). He reviewed papers for the IEEE Computer Graphics and Application Special Issue on Grid Computing and for the iGrid2002 conference and contributed to the development of the international Earth Science Portal (ESP) effort, wearing both ESG and CDP hats. Middleton continued to serve on a National Research Council panel developing a report on the long-term research agenda for the Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) program. He served on the program committees for Computing in Atmospheric Sciences (CAS) conference and the High-Performance Computing Symposium and served as a session chair at the ECMWF computing workshop. Don co-organized and hosted multi-agency international Metadata Workshop at NCAR and a subsequent Earth Science Portal Workshop at NCAR, a multi-agency effort aimed at developing common frameworks for earth science data portals. He participated in the DOE Visualization Frameworks effort, contributed to the DOE's "Town Hall Forums" on Data Management and Visualization, contributed to the DOE Ultrascale Workshop, and participated in NCAR's workshop on Cyberinfrastructure for Environment Science and Education. Don is a member of the Global Grid Forum and participated in the GGF 2003 event in Tokyo, Japan. The MSS Group provides administrative support for three Linux nodes providing DataSpace service in support of the National Center for Data Mining (NCDM) of the University of Illinois at Champagne. The MSS Group participated in a series of presentations and machine room tours in October 2002 for a group of visitors from Japan that were sponsored by StorageTek. This has become an annual event, and has been well received by all of the attendees. Peter O'Neil served on the National LambdaRail (NLR) committee and participates in the Westnet and Quilt networking forums. Peter served as Chair of an NSF proposal review panel. Peter also supported the Cyberinfrastructure for Environmental Research and Education Workshop. Pete Peterson served on the SOARS Steering Committee, and as a community mentor for the SOARS Program. Juli Rew served as a science writing mentor for the SOARS Program. Teresa Shibao, Peter O'Neil, Peter Siemsen, Scot Colburn participated in the Boulder Valley Schools Tech21 Proposal review team. Each year Lana provides guidance and mentoring to grade school children as a science fair judge at the Boulder Country Day School. Lana also teamed with Aaron Anderson to host Dietger Hoffman, a student from Germany, who completed some prototype work on the room reservation system. Markus Stobbs served as co-chair of the Web Outreach, Redesign and Development (WORD) group which is integrating the UCAR, NCAR, and UOP top-level websites into a world-class website. Jim Van Dyke served on the BRAN Management and BRAN Technical committees. VETS staff -- Don Middleton, John Clyne, Darin Oman, Joey Mendoza, Markus Stobbs, and Tim Scheitlin -- provide an ongoing community service at conferences and for NCAR visitors by explaining, supporting, and demonstrating state-of-the-art scientific visualization techniques and technology in the forms of technical presentations and education and outreach presentations. They also provided interactive virtual conferencing services to the scientific community via the Vislab's function as the NCAR AccessGrid node. |
