Overview of computing at NCAR -
Obtaining computing services

Last update: 08/15/2008

This section provides links to web pages that describe everything you need to obtain an allocation, a login, and access to systems in NCAR's supercomputing facility. This section also provides an overview of the services available in this facility.

Obtaining an account for computing resources

To use the computing facility, you need an allocation of computing resources. Resources are allocated in General Accounting Units (GAUs). The High Performance Platforms section of the document Overview of the Allocation Process for Computing Resources at NCAR defines GAUs.

Passwords and accounts must not be shared

Users may not share passwords, CRYPTOCards, or accounts on NCAR/SCD computers. SCD insists on this policy for security reasons and because sharing makes it extremely difficult for SCD to contact the user when there are job or accounting problems. This warning also includes batch jobs: you are not permitted to run jobs under any account other than your own. If you need to share files, please do so via proper UNIX group permissions. SCD's consultants can arrange these permissions.

SCD checks for and reserves the right to disable accounts of users who share passwords, CRYPTOCards, or accounts. SCD also checks for and disables the accounts of users who use weak passwords. See Password guidelines and instructions for changing passwords on SCD computers for more about passwords.

Accounts for university users

For users who received their computing allocation via a university grant, this information helps you understand the university allocation process.

Accounts for Climate Simulation Laboratory users

CSL users who did not receive instructions with the original allocation award should contact the Database Services Team (DBST) to learn what's necessary to use the CSL computers. You may do this via any of the contact methods shown on the DBST home page

For user information, see the Climate Simulation Laboratory website.

Accounts for NCAR users and joint university-NCAR project users

NCAR users who need instructions for getting an NCAR computing facility account should contact their division administrator.

Joint university-NCAR project users who need instructions for getting an NCAR computing facility account should contact the NCAR division administrator associated with their project.
